Regardless of material type, trying to get it to hang the same way you're used to may be impossible; cleaning them where they hang is the solution to that! Here is some common drapery material that I have experience cleaning.
Cotton
Cotton is a resilient material. Between professional cleanings, you can wash cotton drapes manually. If you do it in your machine on a gentle cycle they'll probably come out perfectly clean, but you may never again get them to hang the way you prefer. You should not wash cotton curtains if they have a lining.
Wool
Wool usually needs to be professionally dry cleaned to prevent shrinkage or other problems. You might risk using Woolite if you can rinse it in the sink, but again re-hanging them is the great difficulty.
Sheer Fabric
These need to be cleaned more frequently, since dirt buildup is easier to spot. Our professional cleaners clean them with the utmost gentleness. More frequent vacuuming is very helpful, but also tedious.
Pleated Drapes
No matter what kind of fabric they’re made of, pleated drapes must be cleaned by a professional when your own attempts fail.
